چکیده

Introduction: Parallel transmission (Tx) generalizes conventional Tx and RF shimming, offering extra degrees of freedom and significant opportunities for optimizing Tx performance, improving pulse design trade-off, and leveraging new coil concepts. The present work of developing a 32 Tx-channel system reflects an interest in 1) exploring the opportunities thoroughly and acquiring insights to the question of “what is the optimal number of channels?” and 2) developing state-of-the-art RF sequencer and power amplifier instrumentation. There were significant efforts in recent years prototyping high transmit channel-count research platforms [1,2]. In the following, we describe the RF sequencer and RF power amplifier development efforts and present initial bench testing results.

High-Speed RF Modulation System for 32 Parallel Transmission Channels at 7T

Introduction: Higher field strengths in MRI are well known for their potential to increase image resolution due to higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). However, due to the high dielectric permittivity of human tissue and higher resonance frequencies, and thus shorter wavelengths on the order of the human body size, RF interference artifacts are likely to occur. To overcome these constraints, par...

Highly Distributed RF Transmission with a 32-Channel Parallel Transmit System

Introduction: When RF signal gets transmitted (Tx) / detected (Rx), the B1 / B1 fields interact with the spin system of the imaged object, forming the basis of MR signal induction / detection. The concomitant E field meanwhile gives rise to RF loss in the object and dictates SAR / noise. An MR system implements / optimizes the RF electromagnetic fields for MR via the currents in an RF coil stru...

Design, evaluation and application of a modular 32 channel transmit/receive surface coil array for cardiac MRI at 7T

Background Cardiac MR (CMR) at ultrahigh fields (≥7.0 T) is challenged by B1+ inhomogeneities and signal voids which bear the potential to spoil the signal-to-noise (SNR) benefits at 7.0 T. There is a trend towards an ever larger number of transmit and receive channels, to support multidimensional B1+ shimming and parallel imaging. Therefore this work proposes a modular, two dimensional 32-chan...

Improved B1+ field using a 16-channel Transmit Head Array and an 8-channel pTx System at 7T

INTRODUCTION At 7T, transmit coil arrays using parallel transmit (pTx) [1] systems enable techniques to substantially improve B1 transmit fields. Receive coil arrays offer enhanced sensitivity and parallel imaging performance. However, significant challenges in ultra high field systems are still remaining for the design and implementation of RFcoils for dedicated transmit channels and their int...

32 Channel Coil Array for Parallel RF Transmission

Introduction: As part of a study that investigates a substantially distributed multi-channel parallel transmit approach, head-size 32-element transmit/receive arrays were developed. The specific goal of the coil development is to facilitate reduction of RF power dissipation in the imaged object / the coil structure, and to facilitate B1 shimming / accelerated parallel excitation for an arbitrar...
